A gripping drama depicting a 1950’s jury who is responsible for the fate of a young man accused of murdering his father. This classic play explores the minds of the jurors who must confront their own prejudices and backgrounds as they attempt to ensure that justice is served.

Needed: 12 men of various ages
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.

Characters:

Foreman: A petty man who is impressed with his authority as foreman, and handles himself quite formally. Not overly bright, but persistent.

Juror # 2: A meek, hesitant man who finds it difficult to maintain any opinions of his own. Easily swayed and usually adopts the opinion of the last person to whom he has spoken.

Juror # 3: A very vocal and extremely opinionated man who seems accustomed to forcing his wishes and views upon others.

Juror # 4: A well spoken stock broker who seems to feel a bit above the other jurors. His main concern is with the facts in this case, and he is appalled at the behaviour others.

Juror # 5: A naive, nervous young man who takes his obligations in this case very seriously, but finds it difficult to speak up when others have the floor.

Juror # 6: An honest but dull-witted man who comes upon his decisions slowly and carefully. He is polite, observant and is offended by rudeness.

Juror # 7: A loud, flashy salesman who thinks he has more important things to do than to sit on a jury. He is quick to judge, and comes across as a bully.

Juror # 8: A quiet, thoughtful, gentle man, who sees all sides of every question and constantly seeks the truth. A man of strength who, above all, is willing to stand alone to ensure justice is served.

Juror # 9: A mild gentle old man long since defeated by life. He recognizes himself for what he is and wishes to be courageous without shielding himself behind his many years.

Juror #10: He is an angry, bitter man. An antagonistic bigot that places no values on any human life save his own, who alienates the others with his opinionated attitude.

Juror # 11: A watchmaker from Europe who immigrated in the 1940’s. A man who speaks with a European accent, is humble, and has old world manners.

Juror # 12: A slick, bright advertising man who is analytical and has little understanding of people. He is a superficial snob, but trying to be a good fellow.
